The internal assessment process

The tutor has two elements to his/her role: tutor and assessor. The internal assessor element of the role involves taking responsibility for assessing the candidate’s learning and deciding whether s/he is Proficient i.e. has met all the learning outcomes.

To do this the tutor examines each Candidate Learning Record which gives portfolio references to evidence which meets the assessment criteria. Each qualification is based on the CPCAB underpinning model. This is expressed in the structure of each qualification in the form of either seven units or seven learning outcomes and associated assessment criteria.

Candidates can think of assessment criteria as the ‘learning tasks’ that they need to complete. The Tutor Guides offer guidance to the assessment criteria and additional notes for tutors.

All portfolios must include three kinds of evidence:

  1. Documents (the candidate’s own written work)
  2. Tutor observation (of skills)
  3. Testimony (feedback from peers)

The tutor’s final assessment of the candidate’s work is recorded on the Completion Statement in the Candidate Learning Record. See How to record internal assessment results.
