Qualification information
Qualification Number CBT-L5 is accredited by the Office of the Qualifications & Examinations Regulator (Ofqual) into the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). The qualification number for CBT-L5 is 500/8460/4.

Target candidates

This qualification is intended for candidates who want to develop CBT skills and theory as an integral part of their counselling work.

Minimum age 19 years1 . However, please see CPCAB candidate entry requirements in section 5 of the Qualification Document.
Entry requirements

Candidates must have completed the CPCAB’s Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling (TC-L4) or their RPL (prior learning) equivalent. See also CPCAB candidate entry requirements in section 5 and RPL guidance on the tutor CD.

Assessment

Tutor assessment of candidate portfolio evidencing minimum assessment
requirements.

Additional assessment requirements Externally assessed case review (3,000 –3,500 words).3
Grading system Pass
Personal counselling or therapy (for trainee) None required.
Client work requirements A minimum of 30 hours one-to-one client work with at least three different clients using the CBT model.
Supervision requirements The course must include group training supervision in addition to the candidate’s own supervision arrangements for their external work as per BACP/BABCP minimum requirements. The external supervision for the CBT client work should be with a supervisor who is able to support candidates in their CBT practice.
Staffing and other resources

One tutor-assessor is required for the internal assessment of CBT-L5 candidates.

Tutors must be qualified CBT practitioners with current knowledge and experience. See section 4 of the Qualification Document.
Internal Moderation and Verification Centres are required to have robust internal moderation and verification processes which are verified by CPCAB.

Centre application for CPCAB approval to offer the qualification

Centre application fee: £249 (one-off fee).

Centres are expected to design their own training programmes.4

2To access the OU Foundation Degree, candidates need to have completed our Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling (TC-L4) and be working on either PC-L5 or our Level 5 Certificate in Cognitive Behavioural Therapeutic Skills and Theory (CBT-L5).

4Candidates must be Proficient in both internal and external assessment to receive the qualification.

5All centre-designed courses must be submitted to CPCAB for approval before candidates can be registered. Although the delivery of courses may differ from centre to centre, all delivery must enable the candidates to achieve the learning outcomes specified in the unit.
