Level 4 Diploma in Consultancy Supervision

Introductory Summary
Qualification title: Level 4 Diploma in Consultancy Supervision (CSU-L4).
QCA Accreditation Number: CSU-L4 is accredited into the National Qualifications Framework by the Qualifications & Curriculum Authority (QCA). The QCA's Qualification Accreditation Number for CSU-L4 is 100/5038/3.

The QCA Accreditation Number also appears in the Learning & Skills Council's on-line Learning Aims Database (which can be used to ascertain funding eligibility), except there it is called the “Learning Aim Number”.
Target candidates: This qualification is for learners who have already obtained CPCAB's Level 3 Certificate in Advanced Counselling Skills (CSK-L3) - or its APL and/or APEL equivalent - and want to develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes needed to supervise helpers who are using counselling skills in their work. The concepts and information provided will relate to a range of professional helping relationships within health and social care contexts.

Candidates must:

  • have in place the opportunity, during the training course, to work with supervisees who are working in a helping capacity using counselling skills as part of their work;
  • be themselves working as helping professionals using counselling skills as part of their work.

Note that the supervisory role will normally be only one aspect of the participant's job, although the skills learned will be applicable to a wide range of professional relationships within organisations.

Status of qualification:
  1. Accredited into the National Qualifications Framework by the Qualifications & Curriculum Authority (QCA): Accreditation Number 100/5038/3. This allows funding of eligible courses by the Learning & Skills Council (LSC).
  2. Formally supported by the Employment National Training Organisation (ENTO).
  3. CPCAB qualifications attract a Band C Programme Weighting in the LSC's funding formula and are eligible for LSC funding.
Course length: 120 - 150 Guided Learning Hours (GLH): minimum 120 GLH.
Minimum age: 21 years old.
Entry requirements: Candidates must have obtained CPCAB's Level 3 Certificate in Advanced Counselling Skills (CSK-L3) - or its APL and/or APEL equivalent; and …
  • be working as helping professionals (paid or voluntary) using counselling skills as part of their work;
  • have in place the opportunity, during the training course, to work with supervisees who are working in a helping capacity using counselling skills as part of their work;
  • have at least one year (part-time) post-CSK-L3 experience.
Progression: There is currently no further progression route within CPCAB qualifications.
Recommended maximum group size: Maximum of 16 learners.
Assessment: Candidate Portfolio and externally-assessed Case Review (2,500 -3,000 words).

Candidates must pass both the internal and external assessment to receive the qualification.
Additional study time: Approx 4 hours per week.
Personal counselling or therapy (for trainee): None required. However personal counselling is recommended for those with no experience of this.
Supervisory work requirements: Opportunity to effectively apply and develop the learning covered by the course units. Minimum of 15 hours supervising helpers.
Supervision Requirements: CPCAB requires a minimum of 10 hours of Group Training Supervision to be provided by the Training Centre as part of the course. In addition to this, participants need five hours one-to-one supervisory supervision. One-to-one supervision should encompass contracting, assessment and closing sessions.
Staffing and other resources: At least two tutor-assessors must be involved in all aspects of internal candidate assessment.

Staffing and other resources must reflect the Band C Programme Weighting factor available for this qualification.
Internal moderation and verification: Centres are required to have robust internal moderation and verification processes which are externally verified by CPCAB.
CPCAB candidate registration fee:

£169 per candidate.
Centre application for CPCAB approval to offer the qualification: Centre application fee: £79 (one-off fee).

Centres can design their own training programmes (*) or use approved course material (**) written to CPCAB specifications.

* All Centre-designed courses must be submitted to CPCAB for approval before candidates can be registered. Although the delivery of courses may differ from Centre to Centre, all delivery must enable the candidates to achieve the learning outcomes specified in the units.
