Qualification Descriptors
Centres may apply to CPCAB for a “descriptor” to be attached to certain qualifications:
- A descriptor indicates the specific therapeutic approach, target client group or context within which the counselling or use of counselling skills takes place. It therefore represents a particular application of the qualification concerned.
- The content of a course leading to a descriptor-qualification must reflect the skills, knowledge, understanding and attitudes necessary to work effectively with a specific therapeutic approach, target client group or context.
- The descriptor takes the form of a word or phrase for example Working with Stress which appears, in addition to the formal qualification title, on awarded certificates/diplomas.
- A descriptor does not indicate the nature or composition of the learning group.
- The descriptor does not change the formal CPCAB qualification title, nor the specifications and requirements for the qualification. The use of descriptors does not involve a variation to the qualification units and all candidates for all qualifications (whether they include a descriptor or not) must satisfy the associated CPCAB assessment criteria.
- Candidates for all qualifications are required to undertake a national external assessment. Please note that the external assessment DVD for those taking CSK-L2 and CST-L3, and the role-plays for those taking TC-L4, will not be specific to the descriptor. This should be explained to candidates prior to the external assessment.
- Centres must apply to use a descriptor. Further details, together with an application form, are available from the CPCAB Head Office.
- Centres applying for a descriptor will have to show (as part of the application) that their proposed training course has been endorsed by an appropriate person/organisation with vocational competence in the subject of the descriptor.
