UpdateAugust 2017 No. 59

We've just moved into our smart new office in the grounds of our old headquarters in Baltonsborough. Surrounded by trees – it certainly puts our previous accommodation in the shade!

Designed to be as eco-friendly as possible, the new building is clad in sustainable timber and topped with solar panels, and presents a long and low silhouette in order to blend in unobtrusively with its sylvan setting.

It's also been purpose-built to meet our current and future needs, e.g. it includes a state of the art film studio for our output of counselling training videos, easy access facilities and a super catering kitchen and dining room for when you come and visit us.

As you can see from the pictures below, there's still some work to be done on the outside but on the inside we are busy getting to grips with the telephone system and appreciating the extra space.

CPCAB's telephone system – warning

Please be aware that on Thursday, 10th August, CPCAB's phone system will be inactive due to setting up the new phone system as part of the move to the new office building. It's anticipated that the phones will be unavailable for around 3 hours, between 10:00 and 13:00. Apologies for any inconvenience this might cause.

Feedback

In April's edition of “Tutor Update” we asked if you were able to spare us a few moments to provide us with some feedback on our qualifications. Thank you to those of you who replied – we really appreciate it! But we could certainly do with more. As well as our formal annual qualifications review, we are always grateful for constructive feedback to help us to continue to make improvements. Thank you!

This link will take you to a simple online form.

External assessment dates

The dates for all external assessments for CPCAB qualifications are scheduled as far ahead as possible to help with planning for everyone concerned. Please see the CPCAB website for details.

Reminder! CPD Endorsement scheme

CPCAB now has a CPD endorsement scheme. This is open to any organisation wanting recognition for a CPD programme or event which is counselling related. The CPD activity can be anything from a half-day work shop up to 30 hours of contact time.

The process involves:

  • Application for approval (to be a CPD centre, and for the training)
  • Quality assurance of training (including a visit from CPCAB)
  • On-going monitoring via participant feedback
  • Annual renewal of CPD endorsement

For a fixed annual fee your CPD activity will be advertised on the CPCAB website and you can run the agreed training as many times as you want during that year. You can produce your own certificates and use the CPCAB logo. CPCAB counselling professionals and administrative staff are on hand to support and advise you!

Contact jackie@cpcab.co.uk or heather@cpcab.co.uk if you would like to discuss your ideas.

EV visits

A reminder to centres that where you register fewer than the minimum number given in the tutor documents, you are liable to a charge for your external verification visit(s). This has always been the case, although there has always been a certain degree of leniency, but in recent years the problem has become much more widespread and it will be necessary to make the charge, so as to cover costs. It has been agreed that a flat fee of £300 which includes travelling expenses is fairer than imposing extra costs which could be punitive for some of our more distant centres. As always, thank you for your support.

A reminder: Understanding Substance Misuse – November workshop

After receiving a lot of enquiries, CPCAB would like to offer you the opportunity to take part in a USM-L2 workshop later this year. The 2-day workshop on 'How to teach Substance Misuse' will be held at Head Office on the 24th and 25th November 2017.

You don't have to be a counsellor to deliver the qualification but by attending this workshop you will gain the underpinning knowledge you require. Diploma students may also find the training helpful to their practice.

This 2-day workshop will cost just £100 per person instead of the normal price of £140. Lunch and refreshments will be provided but please note that accommodation and travel expenses, if required, are not included in this price. Places are limited so please complete the online booking form if you would like to attend.

If you would like any further information please contact Jackie Rice on 01458 850350.

CPCAB Assessors – Vacancy

We are currently looking to increase the number of our assessors for levels 4 and 5. If you have substantial experience of teaching at this level, with some assessment and ideally some moderation/verification under your belt we would be interested in hearing from you! The role would require you being able to commit to marking a number of audio recordings, written papers and case reviews; the volume is variable throughout the year. We will offer you standardisation training and support to familiarise you with the requirements of the role.

Please contact either Sandra McKeever (Qualification Leader, Level 4), Caroline Waite (Qualification Leader, Levels 5 & 6) or Marina Richards, External Assessment Service Manager.

Or contact us by phone on 01458 850350... we are keen to hear from you even if it's just for an exploratory chat!

Standardisation training for tutors for the 2017/18 academic year

Dates for 2017-18 standardisation training plus online booking are now available on our website.

Only nine more places available on Friday 29th September in London for levels 2-4. Please hurry and book if you want to attend on this day. A reminder that the higher level day in London on Saturday 30th September also covers the level 4 Diploma.

Humour

First person: ‘I'm having treatment now, you know.’

Second person: ‘What for? Is it your face?’

First person: ‘No! It's for my low self-esteem!’

Second person: ‘What? You mean you're not having treatment for your face?’
